Linkwater School’s Green Gold Review

Linkwater School has now been a Green Gold School for 5 years.  Students recently shared what they have done since becoming a Green Gold School as part of their review reflection. There would need to be a lot more pages to share all of the projects that they have undertaken and how they have intertwined sustainability into their curriculum, programmes, and wider community. Led by their awesome students, we got to see their many actions displayed on whole walls around their library.  Projects ranged from a hazelnut living hut through to upcycled swings.

Kindergartens shine silver!

Two of our kindergartens reflected at Enviroschools Silver in Term 2: congratulations to Picton Kindergarten and Seymour Kindergarten. Tamariki at Picton Kindergarten have been doing lots of inspiring work in their local environment.  They visited Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary and planted native trees, helped to clean up local beaches, and learnt how to care for the creatures in the ocean.  They even upcycled old tee-shirts to make their own carry bags, which they can use instead of plastic ones! At Seymour Kindergarten the vision is 'looking after Papatūānuku, so she can look after us'.  Tamariki and their whanau learn about the natural environment in a hands-on way.  The kindergarten has a worm farm, compost area,...

Recycling bin revamp at Bohally

Bohally Intermediate's classroom recycling bins got a makeover this term, as classes battled it out to win a mufti day. Each class was challenged to revamp their bins for general recycling and GOOS (Good On One Side) paper, in a competition run by the school's enviro-team.  The competition aimed to make students and teachers think about recycling, and to make sure that the bins were easy to find in the classroom.  Some classes went all out, completely redesigning their bins from the ground up, while others worked to make what they already had more eye-catching.  Judging took creativity, wow-factor, functionality, and the use of recycled materials into consideration, and gave bonus points to classes that had...

Thrift shop open for business at MGC

Marlborough Girls' College students have a new addition to their school: a thrift shop where students can recycle and purchase used clothing. A visit to Nelson College for Girls last year sparked the idea for this exciting new venture.  Since then, a group of keen students have worked with supportive MGC staff to take the thrift shop from idea to reality.  The students have created an inviting shop, bursting with donated clothing, shoes, and accessories.  They have used recycled materials as much as possible, including upcycled and repurposed driftwood poles, secondhand shelves, and picture frames.  Students wanting to dress up for house sports days and competitions will be able to select clothes and accessories from the 'house...

A new noticeboard at Tirimoana

Earlier this term, students and staff from Linkwater School and members of the Tirimoana community attended a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Tirimoana Reserve, to celebrate the installation of a new noticeboard.  The noticeboard is the culmination of a project by one of Tirimoana’s youngest residents, Linkwater School student Angus Howe. Last year, Angus learnt about the stormwater system, and found out that any rubbish or pollution that goes down the drains on his street, ends up in the nearby bay.  To raise awareness about this, he helped to attach blue fish to the drains in Tirimoana, and then went one step further, designing a noticeboard that would allow him to further educate the...

MGC achieve Enviroschools Silver

Making wax wraps, visiting and sharing ideas with Nelson College for Girls, developing an upcycling shop, and presenting a whole year's class work from an Environmental Sustainability Course to community representatives, has helped Marlborough Girls' College successfully reflect at the Enviroschools Silver level. This is an impressive achievement for a larger secondary school and we congratulate the students and staff who have supported them, in particular lead teacher Melynda Bentley, who ran the Environmental Sustainability Course for the first time this year. Silver for Riverlands School

A big congratulations to Riverlands School for successfully reflecting at Enviroschools Silver. Riverlands School was one of the first schools to join the Enviroschools programme 12 years ago, and have continued to take special care of their environment ever since. With an active edible garden programme, students get the opportunity to learn about composting, growing seeds, and harvesting vegetables and fruits. Harvest Friday is a popular event at the school, and is celebrated with a market day.  There are lots of produce, preserve, and craft stalls, along with treats made from fruit and vegetables grown at school. Earth Day Celebrations at Riverlands School

At the end of last term, Riverlands School got the whole school involved in celebrating Earth Day 2018!

Student enviro leaders planned, organised and ran activities that got students thinking about how they could go easy on the Earth at school and at home.  They used all of their creativity and organisational skills to come up with a huge number of fun and interesting activities that included a reading of "The Lorax", scavenger hunts, making headbands, earth crafts, goal setting, kahoot quizzes and 'the waste timeline'. Edible Gardens Update | Rapaura School

Edible gardens facilitator, Angela Wentworth, updates us on what was going on in the Rapaura School garden last term. 'Parts of the plant' salad To start the term, the children from Jellyman Room went on a discovery walk through the garden to look at what was growing; tasting pak choi flowers and picking celery and lettuce for the 'parts of the plant' salad they were going to make that afternoon. Edible gardens update | Blenheim School

Tracy, Edible Gardens Facilitator at Blenheim School, updates us on a busy Term 4 in the garden. Our whenua (soil) needs just as much care as the plants we grow.  The children started their term discussing soil. With pH testers in hand, they tested and compared the soils in each of their garden beds.  They discovered different plants like different soil types and poor soils can be improved by adding organic matter or compost.  Swapping testers for spades and trowels, the children prepared a bed for their summer corn crop, and spread mulch on some of garden beds in preparation for the judging of the Garden Marlborough Best School Garden Awards.  To show the judges how...
