Enviro-FUN at Spring Creek School
Students at Spring Creek School had a whole day of enviro-FUN, exploring how they could help their environment using their school values.
They used loads of activities from ‘Me in my Environment’ in the Enviroschools Kit, which can be found starting at Page 69 if you would like to try any of these at your school.
Here are some of the things that they got up to:
They built bird’s nests using materials found from the school grounds, giving them an appreciation for their school’s natural environment, and an understanding of what amazing engineers birds are! (The one pictured here was built by a bird, not a student!)
They wrote recipes for a healthy school environment. Flowers, friendships, bees, grass and playgrounds were all ‘ingredients’ in the recipes.
They used drama and role play to explore the structure and function of trees. Once all the parts of the ‘tree’ were in place, each group had actions and sound-effects to make the tree come to life. There was swaying, swooping, wiggling, whooshing and, as you can imagine, lots of giggling too!
Students worked in groups to brainstorm their ideas of what a ‘landscape’ is. After lots of thought and discussion, each group was able to come up with their own definition.
Students enjoyed researching a native NZ animal and sharing what they had found out with everyone.
If you had to take some sunflower seeds away in a spaceship, what would you need to have with you to look after them? The children considered this, and put everything they would need to take in these colourful suitcases.
